When an assistant is asked for a good dentist in Vaishali Nagar or a reliable AC repair service in Malviya Nagar, it does not read your blog. It assembles an answer from your Business Profile, your reviews, your opening hours and whatever your site states plainly about where you are and what you do. That is why generative engine optimisation for a local business is mostly profile hygiene and review integrity, and only partly content.
Key Highlights
- Google names three local ranking factors: relevance, distance and prominence, with prominence resting partly on links, review count and ratings.
- Keyword-stuffed business names are a suspension risk, not a shortcut: Google’s guidelines say your name should reflect your real-world name and warn that extra information can lead to suspension.
- Review gating is explicitly prohibited. Google’s policy bars discouraging negative reviews, selectively soliciting positive ones, offering incentives and setting staff review quotas.
- You cannot mark up your own reviews. Google’s LocalBusiness documentation restricts aggregateRating and review to sites that capture reviews of other businesses.
- ChatGPT takes general location from your IP address and may share queries with third-party search providers such as Bing, which makes a verified Bing listing cheap insurance.
What Decides Whether AI Recommends a Local Business?
Google states its local ranking plainly, and the statement has not changed with the arrival of AI answers. Relevance is how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for. Distance is how far each business is from the searcher, with Google using what it knows about their location when none is shared. Prominence means how well-known a business is, and Google adds that this depends in part on how many websites link to the business and how many reviews and positive ratings it has.
Those three factors are the whole brief for local AI search optimisation. An assistant answering a nearby-business question is drawing on the same local corpus that feeds Maps and the local pack, so the work that improves one improves the other. There is no separate local ranking system sitting behind AI Mode that a vendor can sell you access to.
Google also states that it does not allow businesses to request or pay for a better local ranking. Any GEO AI platform promising placement in local AI answers is either selling a listings-management service under a new name or selling nothing at all, and the distinction is worth establishing before a contract is signed.
Why Your Business Profile Carries More Weight than Your Blog
The best practices for ranking locally according to Google are concise and unimpressive. Ensure the business is verified because this proves to Google that you have the authority to represent the business and increases the chances of the profile being displayed. Ensure that the data in the profile is complete and correct, as the wrong information may prevent the profile from being displayed for relevant search terms. Ensure the complete physical location where the customers will access the business is added, along with the hours of operation, category, and features.
That list is the honest core of generative engine optimisation for a local business, and most agencies skip it because it is not billable at content rates. A clinic with four missing attributes, no special hours over Diwali and an unverified second profile has three ranking problems that no amount of blogging will offset.
One item on Google’s list is conditional. In-store products can appear in local results so customers can see what is in stock, but the feature is limited to retail businesses in eligible countries or regions, so it needs checking against your own market rather than assuming.
What Does Google Say About Your Business Name?
This is where Indian local listings most often break the rules, and the rule is quotable. Google’s guidelines state that your name should reflect your business’s real-world name. The list of things to leave out is specific: marketing taglines, store codes, trademark symbols, hours or closure notices, phone numbers, URLs, location details such as floor or nearby landmarks or “near” phrases, product or service descriptions, containment details such as being inside another business, fully capitalised words that are not part of the real name, and the same name repeated in multiple languages or scripts. Extra information in the name can lead to suspension.
So “Best Dental Clinic in Jaipur | Dr Sharma Dental Care | Near Civil Lines” is not aggressive AEO marketing. It is a profile waiting to be suspended, and a suspension costs more than every keyword it was carrying. The same guidelines rule out keywords and URLs in address fields, and links, promotions, prices or sales language in the business description.
The tough thing is that filled names often get ranked during the time they have been there. This is not a debate on efficacy but one about risk tolerance, and it needs to be done in an open discussion with the owner of the company.
Which Categories and Attributes Actually Matter?
Google’s instruction is to choose the fewest categories that describe the core business and to make them as specific as possible. The test it gives is useful: categories should describe what the business is, not what it offers, sells or features. A bakery that also serves coffee is a bakery, not a bakery plus a coffee shop plus a dessert shop plus a caterer, and a profile loaded with the latter three reads as less relevant rather than more.
Attributes do the work that extra categories are wrongly used for, and completing them is the cheapest win available in local AI search optimisation. Parking, Wi-Fi, wheelchair access, accepted payment methods, women-led, and the service options that matter in your trade are all comparison criteria an assistant can filter on, and each one left blank is a filter you quietly fail.
Categories belonging to a co-located or contained business are off limits, which matters for the shop-within-a-shop arrangements common in Indian retail. Hours deserve the same care: Google lists business types that should not post hours at all, including hotels, schools, cinemas, transport services, airports, event venues and appointment-only businesses.
How Should a Service-Area Business Be Set Up?
Plumbers, electricians, pest control, home tutors and mobile repair services are the bulk of local search in Indian cities, and the rules for them are different. A business that travels to customers without a storefront gets one service-area profile. A business that serves customers at its own location should have one profile for a central location with a defined service area. Separate locations with their own service areas and staff can each hold a profile.
Three constraints catch people out. Service areas generally should not extend more than about two hours’ drive from the business, which rules out the city-wide-plus-NCR service areas some listings claim. Service-area businesses should hide their address from customers. And virtual offices do not qualify for a profile at all, while co-working listings require clear signage, in-person customer service during business hours and staff on site.
Age-restricted trades are excluded from the service-area route entirely. Alcohol, cannabis and weapons cannot run as service-area-only businesses without a storefront, which is a compliance line rather than a ranking one.
Do Reviews Still Decide Local Recommendations?
Reviews feed prominence, so they matter as much as they ever did and the shortcuts have become riskier. Google’s prohibited and restricted content policy is unusually direct, and the prohibitions are worth reading as written rather than paraphrased by a vendor.
| Practice | Policy position |
| Reviews not based on a real experience | Not allowed |
| Reviews paid for, directly or in kind | Removed |
| Posting from multiple accounts at one person’s request | Banned |
| Content posted due to an incentive offered by a business | Not allowed |
| Discouraging negative reviews or selectively soliciting positive ones | Prohibited |
| Requiring staff to meet review quotas | Prohibited |
| Offering payment, discounts or free goods for a review or its removal | Not permitted |
| Reviews based on a conflict of interest, including employment or competitor ties | Removed |
| Email addresses, phone numbers or links inside reviews | Not permitted |
What remains permitted is narrow and sufficient, which is why review practice belongs in a local AI search optimisation brief rather than in a sales incentive scheme. Merchants may encourage genuine reviews, so long as they do not influence the rating or the content and do not request that specific content be included. Replying to reviews is on Google’s own best-practice list, and a thoughtful reply to a two-star review does more for a prospective customer reading an AI summary than ten solicited five-star lines with no detail in them.
The practical consequence for anyone selling GEO AI services is that review volume is no longer a lever you can pull safely. A clinic offering a discount for a review is in breach, and the discount survives in a WhatsApp message long after the review is posted.
What Structured Data Does a Local Site Need?
Less than most templates install, and one common piece is a mistake. LocalBusiness requires only name and a PostalAddress, with as many address fields completed as possible. The recommended set is where the value sits: geo with latitude and longitude to at least five decimal places, openingHoursSpecification, telephone with country and area codes, url pointing at the specific location, priceRange under 100 characters, and department for nested departments.
The mistake is self-reviews. Google’s documentation restricts aggregateRating and review to sites that capture reviews of other local businesses, which means marking up your own testimonials is outside the guidance however many plugins offer to do it. That single line settles an argument that recurs on every local build.
Three mechanics are worth getting right. Mark up each location as its own LocalBusiness using the most specific subtype available, such as Restaurant, and use an array for multiple types, because additionalType is not supported. For hours, 24-hour opening is expressed as 00:00 to 23:59, a day closed all day sets both times to 00:00, and hours running past midnight use one specification spanning into the next day. Seasonal closures use validFrom and validThrough, and omitting both means the hours apply year-round. Getting this right is ordinary generative engine optimisation work: the markup does not make you quotable, it makes you correctly represented when you are quoted.
Where Do the Other Assistants Get Local Data?
Less is published here, so it pays to separate what is documented from what is inferred. OpenAI states that ChatGPT collects general location based on your IP address and may share it with third-party search providers such as Bing to improve result accuracy. It does not publish a local ranking system, a place-data specification or a listings programme.
The reasonable inference, and it should be offered as one, is that a verified and complete Bing listing is cheap insurance for any business that cares about ChatGPT answers. It costs an afternoon, it cannot hurt, and the alternative is leaving your hours and address to whatever a third-party aggregator last recorded. Honest AEO marketing says this is an inference rather than a published requirement.
For Google’s assistant the position is clearer. Gemini appears in Google’s own list of places free product listings can show, alongside Search, Maps, Images, Lens, YouTube and the products module on a Business Profile, which puts Business Profile and Merchant Center data inside the assistant rather than beside it. That is the strongest practical reason to treat the profile as infrastructure.
Which Local Surfaces Show Stock and Prices?
Retail is the exception where local goes beyond name, address and hours. Free local listings let in-store products appear for businesses that opt in, and the shopping knowledge panel is available in a named list of countries that includes India. The carousel of popular products, by contrast, is still confined to mobile in the United States, so an Indian shop should not be judged against it.
Google has also started doing the phoning itself. Its November 2025 announcement described a feature that calls nearby stores on a shopper’s behalf to ask about stock, price and promotions, then emails or texts the results back, limited to toys, health and beauty, and electronics in the United States. Google framed it as a new way for merchants to drive foot traffic, which tells you where this is heading even though an Indian retailer cannot use it yet.
The planning point is simple. The data that answers “do they have it, what does it cost, are they open” is the data these features consume, and it lives in the profile and the feed rather than in a page of copy.
How Should a 30-Day Local Fix Be Sequenced?
- Week one, claim and clean: Verify every location, find and resolve duplicate profiles, correct the business name to the real-world name, and remove keywords and URLs from name and address fields.
- Week two, complete the profile: Fewest and most specific categories, every applicable attribute, regular and special hours, a current photo set, and a service area that stays inside the two-hour guidance.
- Week three, fix the site: One page per location with LocalBusiness markup using the most specific subtype, correct openingHoursSpecification, matching name, address and phone number, and self-review markup removed.
- Week four, set the review practice and the baseline: A compliant review request that offers nothing, a reply routine covering negative reviews, a verified listing on Bing, and a recorded baseline before anything is judged.
How Do You Measure Local AI Visibility?
Build a prompt panel with real local intent. Twenty questions a customer would actually ask, phrased by neighbourhood and need, run monthly, scored on whether you appear, whether the hours and address quoted are correct, and which competitor is named instead. Correctness matters as much as presence, because a recommendation carrying last year’s closing time costs a visit.
Business Profile performance data answers the demand question that no ranking tool can: calls, direction requests and messages, read month on month rather than day to day. Search Console helps less than people expect here, because AI Mode and AI Overviews activity is folded into the Web search type instead of being broken out, leaving any movement you see as a direction rather than a measurement.
Two India-specific notes belong in any reporting pack. AI Mode has been generally available in India since 8 July 2025 and in English, so a Hindi or Marathi prompt panel is testing a less settled surface. And a GEO AI dashboard that reports a single visibility score across assistants is compressing several different systems into one number, which is fine as a trend line and misleading as a diagnosis.
Local GEO as Savit Runs It
At Savit Interactive, we start local engagements with the profile rather than the content plan, because an unverified listing with a stuffed name and four missing attributes is a ranking problem that no article solves. Our order is the one above: claim and clean, complete, fix the site, then set a review practice that would survive being read aloud to the business owner’s lawyer. Two decades of search work from Mumbai across retail, healthcare, education, logistics and manufacturing have taught us that the local winners are rarely the loudest; they are the ones whose hours are right on a public holiday. Businesses comparing local AI search optimisation proposals should ask how the provider handles review requests and name compliance before asking how many blogs come with the retainer.
How many categories should a local business use?
The fewest that describe the core business, each as specific as possible. Categories should describe what the business is rather than what it offers or sells, and categories belonging to a co-located business are not permitted. A long category list reads as less relevant, not more, which is why disciplined AEO marketing trims it.
Start by checking your Business Profile’s Name field. In case it has a location, a description of services offered, or a tagline, change that right away, then ensure that each of your locations is verified and that you eliminate duplicates. This will take the best part of an afternoon, and there is no other problem that will remove your listing from any map in one fell swoop.
Here at Savit Interactive, we see local GEO AI as having next to nothing to do with AI. The businesses that get recommendations are the ones a person would recommend themselves: easy to locate, open during the advertised hours, reviewed honestly, and with descriptions of both their services and locations. Each and every good assistant out there is looking for these four characteristics, and there is no way to buy them.
