A new search update from Google, the October 2023 spam update, was launched recently. The search engine company stated, “The spam update expands Google’s coverage in many languages and spam types”. According to Google, the October 2023 spam update aims to clear up multiple types of spam reported by community members in Turkish, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Hindi, Chinese, and other languages.”  

Google has disclosed a new adjustment to its search algorithm in an attempt to reduce spam results for users worldwide. The October 2023 Spam Update targets spam that is cloaked, hacked, automatically manufactured, scraped and written in various languages, including Turkish, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Hindi, and Chinese. According to Google, the upgrade was made in response to complaints from community members who said they were getting more spam results in their own languages. Prior to this, the October 2022 spam update and the December 2022 link spam update were the most recent confirmed Google spam updates. The November 2021 spam upgrade came before that. Along with the July 2021 link spam upgrade, Google also published a two-part spam update on June 23 and June 28, 2021.

Although it may target English results, it may be related if you observe changes to your rankings over the next weeks and your site is not predominantly in English. This upgrade primarily tackles spam that is cloaked, hacked, generated automatically, and scraped.

What Qualifies as Spam, according to Google?

  • Affiliate pages with little content were primarily concerned with monetisation.  

If a website employs techniques like cloaking, cunning redirection, or building “doorway” pages, Google may flag it as spam. Any deliberate attempts to deceive search engines will result in problems.  

Google’s policies also caution against using aggressive sales strategies like misleading claims and misrepresenting goods and services.
