What changes between WordPress, Shopify and a custom build is not your ceiling but your cost: how much effort each technical fix takes, which problems you can solve yourself, and which ones the platform has already decided for you permanently.

That makes choosing the best CMS for SEO a question about constraints rather than features, and constraints only matter where your business actually needs to move. A publisher posting four times a week and a retailer managing 4,000 products are dealing with very different pressures, even though the decision might look like the same one on paper. That’s why one recommendation rarely works well for both. The more useful approach is to look at each platform’s limits and see which ones are least likely to get in the way of the work you actually plan to do.

Key Highlights

WordPress runs 39.6% of all websites and holds 58.3% of the CMS market, with Shopify at 5.3% and 7.9%, on W3Techs figures surveyed on 27 October 2026.

About a third of websites use no monitored CMS at all, which is the real size of the custom-built segment.

There is no single page experience ranking signal, and relevance comes first even where page experience is sub-par.

Incorrect robots.txt edits on Shopify can cause loss of all traffic, and the customisation is unsupported by Shopify’s own help team.

Blocking AI crawlers on Shopify does not stop Shopify Catalog sending your product data to agentic storefronts, which is a platform decision robots.txt cannot override.

Where the CMS Market Sits in 2026

Scale decides how much help you can hire and how many people have already solved your problem. W3Techs, surveying on 27 October 2026, puts WordPress at 39.6% of all websites and 58.3% of the CMS market. Shopify holds 5.3% of all websites and 7.9% of the CMS market, with Wix at 4.2%, Squarespace at 2.4%, Joomla at 1.1%, and both Webflow and Drupal below 1%.

The figure most people skip is the remainder. Around 32.1% of websites use none of the content management systems W3Techs monitors, which is the honest scale of custom builds, in-house frameworks and headless setups. A custom website is not an exotic choice; it is roughly a third of the web.

None of that is a ranking argument, and treating market share as evidence for the best CMS platform for SEO confuses popularity with capability. What this really tells you is how deep the talent pool is. A WordPress problem has probably been solved and documented thousands of times. A problem inside your own framework, on the other hand, may have only been solved by the person who built it- and only if they’re still around to help.

What Google Actually Says About Platform Choice

Very little, and that silence is the answer. Google’s starter guidance on appearing in Search is that “you usually don’t need to do anything except publish your site on the web.” Content management systems come up only in passing, as a convenience: most of them turn the titles you write into a <title> element automatically, so your job is mainly to write good ones.

When it comes to performance, Google’s published position is actually more modest than what you often hear in the industry. There isn’t one single page experience signal. Core ranking systems look at several signals together, with relevance coming first, so highly relevant content can still rank even when its page experience isn’t great. Page experience matters more when several genuinely useful pages are competing for the same query. That’s a much narrower claim than most platform pitches tend to make.

So an SEO-friendly CMS is not a category Google recognises. The published checklist is one that all three options can satisfy: good Core Web Vitals, secure serving, content that displays well on mobile, ads that do not interfere with the main content, no intrusive interstitials, and a clear line between the main content and everything else. That list is also why the WordPress vs Shopify for SEO debate never resolves on Google’s terms, since both platforms tick every box. Patience is part of the spec too, because some changes register within hours and others take months, with a few weeks the minimum before judging whether anything helped.

WordPress SEO: What You Control

Almost everything, which is both the attraction and the exposure. WordPress SEO work is unconstrained at template level: you set the URL structure, the heading hierarchy, the canonical logic, the internal linking, the structured data and the robots directives, and you can change any of them later without asking permission. For a business that intends to publish seriously, that is the deciding advantage.

The real cost tends to show up later, in maintenance. Every plugin you add becomes another thing to update, another set of database queries to deal with, and another possible security headache. It’s also pretty easy to end up with several plugins doing the same job, like four different ones all adding their own schema and getting in each other’s way.

Performance is similar. A lot depends on how the site is built and what you’ve added to it. So when a WordPress site is slow, it’s not necessarily because WordPress itself is slow. Quite often, it comes down to the choices made along the way.

The practical rule, and the one that settles most arguments about the best CMS for SEO, is that WordPress rewards teams who will own it. If nobody is responsible for updates, a staging environment and a quarterly audit, the flexibility turns into drift, and a platform that could do anything ends up doing whatever the last plugin decided.

Shopify SEO: What the Platform Decides for You

Shopify trades control for reliability, and its own documentation is unusually frank about the trade. Shopify SEO sits inside a managed system where hosting, security, checkout and uptime are handled, and in exchange several technical decisions are made for you and cannot be reversed by you.

The robots.txt file is a good example of where Shopify gives you some control, but within limits. You can create a robots.txt.liquid template to customise directives, allow or block certain crawlers, add sitemap URLs, and set crawl delays.

For most stores, though, the default file already does a decent job. It blocks admin, cart, checkout, account, and order pages, along with filtered and sorted collection URLs that could create duplicate content. Shopify strongly advises against replacing the template with plain text rules. Once you do that, Shopify can no longer keep the file in line with its own practices as changes are made.

Three cautions in the same documentation deserve weight in a platform decision. The customisation is unsupported, so Shopify Support will not help with edits. Incorrect use “can result in loss of all traffic,” in Shopify’s own words. And network-level bot blocking or a proxy placed in front of Shopify is not supported at all, which closes an option a self-hosted site has by default.

A fourth point matters more every month. Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt does not stop Shopify Catalog from sending product data to agentic storefronts. If who may use your catalogue is a commercial question for your business rather than a technical one, that decision has already been made on your behalf, and no file in your theme reverses it.

Custom Website SEO and Its Real Bill

A custom website gives you far more freedom, but that freedom comes with a cost. With custom website SEO, nothing is really there unless someone has built it. Canonical tags, pagination, structured data, XML sitemaps, redirects, breadcrumbs, even a simple editing interface- all of these need to be planned and developed. And if nobody looks after them later, they can just as easily stop working.

The real reason to choose a custom build is that your business needs something specific. Maybe you have a product configurator, an unusual catalogue, a complicated quoting process, or an integration that no plugin can handle properly. In those cases, trying to make a standard platform fit can take more time and effort than building something around your actual needs.

But there’s a catch. Developers don’t always think about search requirements unless someone spells them out in the brief. If these things are missed before launch, fixing them afterwards can cost several times more than getting them right from the start.

So if you’re going custom, put the SEO requirements in the contract. Make sure titles, meta descriptions, and URLs can be edited without calling a developer. Content should be server-rendered, sitemaps should update automatically, the marketing team should be able to manage redirects, and the schema should match what’s actually visible on each page.

These six requirements can prevent a lot of avoidable trouble. And when they’re missing, it’s not hard to see how an expensive custom website can end up performing worse than a standard template.

Which Platform Wins on Each SEO Point?

A useful website CMS comparison judges each platform on what it makes easy, hard or impossible, rather than on whether it is search-friendly in the abstract.

Requirement

WordPress

Shopify

Custom

URL structure control

Full, changeable later

Fixed paths for products and collections

Whatever you specify

robots.txt control

Full

Via robots.txt.liquid, unsupported by Shopify Support

Full

Network-level bot control

Available

Not supported

Available

Structured data

Plugins or theme code, conflicts common

Theme-level, generally consistent

Built to spec, or missing entirely

Page speed

Depends on theme, host and plugins

Managed and generally consistent

Depends entirely on the build

Content publishing

Strongest of the three

Capable, blog structure is fixed

As good as what was built

Checkout and payments

Plugin territory

Core strength

Expensive to build and certify

Who fixes a problem

Large public talent pool

Shopify plus partners

Only your developers

Ongoing cost

Hosting, plugins, maintenance

Subscription, apps, transaction terms

Development retainer

The rows also show why Shopify SEO work tends to be shorter and narrower than the WordPress equivalent, and why a WordPress vs Shopify for SEO verdict depends on which three rows you care about. Read the rows that matter to your business and ignore the rest, because the best CMS for SEO is decided by three or four rows rather than by the total. A content publisher and a 4,000-product retailer are not choosing between the same strengths, and a comparison that scores every row equally has been built to sell a conclusion.

Does Page Speed Depend on Your CMS?

Partly, but probably not as much as people make it sound. The three Core Web Vitals are Largest Contentful Paint, which should be 2.5 seconds or less; Interaction to Next Paint, which should be under 200 milliseconds; and Cumulative Layout Shift, which should stay below 0.1.

These numbers come from real people using the site, not just tests run in a lab. That’s why two websites using the same platform and theme can still get very different results.

Google’s position is also more measured than the industry often suggests. Core Web Vitals are part of its ranking systems, and good scores are recommended, but they don’t guarantee better rankings. Spending time chasing perfect scores purely for SEO may not always be worth it. Page experience was extended to desktop in November 2021.

The platform effect on this is real but secondary, which is the most common misreading in any search for the best platform. Shopify’s managed stack tends to produce consistent results with less work. WordPress varies widely because the variables belong to you. A custom build can be the fastest of the three or the slowest, depending entirely on who wrote it. Check your own figures in the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console before accepting anyone’s claim about a platform, including this one. Speed alone has never decided the best CMS for SEO and it does not decide it now.

How Do You Choose a CMS Platform?

Work through the business questions first, because the technical comparison only settles arguments the business has already framed. Anyone asking how to choose a CMS platform should be able to answer these six before booking a demo.

What you sell and how you sell it: products with variants, stock and checkout point one way, while services, expertise and lead generation point another.

Who will own the site in eighteen months: an in-house developer, an agency retainer or nobody at all is the single most predictive answer on this list.

How much you intend to publish: a serious content programme stresses the editing experience every day, and fixed blog structures start to chafe quickly.

What is genuinely unusual about the business: if a configurator, a quoting flow or an odd catalogue shape is central, price the fight against a platform honestly.

Where you will be selling in three years: multi-country and multi-currency plans change the answer more than almost anything else on this list.

The maintenance budget rather than the build budget: every option carries an ongoing cost, and the ones that hide it are the ones that fail quietly.

A business that answers those honestly usually finds the decision already made. The best website platform for SEO is simply the one whose constraints sit furthest from the things you need to do often.

The Migration Cost Nobody Budgets

Changing platforms can do more harm to organic traffic than the choice of platform ever helped in the first place. And most of that damage can be avoided. URLs change during a migration, so every old address needs to redirect to its actual equivalent, not just the homepage. Internal links need updating, structured data needs rebuilding, and canonical tags need to be checked against the new templates.

Some drop in traffic is still possible because Google needs to crawl and reassess the site. That can take anywhere from a few hours to several months, so nobody can promise an exact recovery date. For a clean migration, six to twelve weeks is a reasonable recovery window. But if there’s no redirect map, it’s not really a recovery process. You’re starting over.

The bigger point is to think beyond whatever is frustrating you right now. Moving platforms just because your developer finds the current one annoying rarely justifies the risk to traffic. Moving because the platform genuinely can’t support something the business now needs is a different matter.

When Should a Business Build Custom?

When the thing that makes you money is the thing no platform models. That is the entire test, and it is a higher bar than most briefs assume. Arguments about WordPress vs custom website tend to collapse the moment someone asks which specific requirement WordPress cannot meet, because the answer is usually a preference rather than a constraint.

There are three situations where going custom really makes sense. The first is when a product or service configurator is central to how customers buy. The second is when you need an integration with an internal system that works live, rather than syncing data overnight. The third is when your catalogue or data structure simply doesn’t fit the usual products-and-collections model. This comes up much more often in industrial B2B supply than in retail.

Outside these cases, custom development can mean paying for control you may never actually need. And the cost doesn’t stop once the site is built. A sensible middle ground is to use a managed platform for the standard stuff and build a custom application for the parts that are genuinely different. Connect the two properly, rather than spending money rebuilding a content management system you could have had for the cost of hosting..

Why the Platform Rarely Explains the Rankings

Because the variables that dominate are not platform variables. Two stores on the same platform, running the same theme, can perform completely differently on the strength of their product data, their content depth, their reviews and who links to them. The WordPress against Shopify argument is usually a proxy for a conversation about effort, and effort is where results actually come from.

The published position supports that reading. Relevance leads, page experience helps mainly when many helpful pages compete, and there is no single signal to engineer. No platform supplies topical depth, a reason for anyone to link to you, or a product page that answers the question a buyer actually asked.

Where the platform does decide outcomes is at the edges, and those are worth checking before you commit. Whether you can control what crawlers may do. Whether your URL structure can change later. Whether a routine fix needs a developer or a settings page. Those are the points at which a platform choice becomes permanent, and they are the only points where it deserves to dominate the decision.

What Savit Tells Clients Before a Rebuild

At Savit Interactive, the first question on any replatforming brief is which specific requirement the current platform cannot meet, and a surprising number of rebuilds stop at that question. Where a move is justified, we insist on the redirect map and the measurement baseline before any design work starts, because those two documents decide whether the traffic survives the change. Twenty years in, with more than 100 people across offices in Mumbai, Pune and Australia, 5,000 clients served and over 55,000 keywords ranked in sectors from apparel and ecommerce to healthcare, education, logistics, manufacturing and AI and LLM businesses, the pattern holds: the sites that come out ahead are the ones whose owners kept publishing through the migration. Businesses weighing a rebuild should ask any agency what it would keep rather than what it would replace, and our AI SEO Playbook sets out how we answer that.

Reading Time: 10 minutesNo platform ranks better than another, and Google has never said one does.
